A spate of recent London Swans wins has seen the club song already sung more times in 2018 then during any other single-season of the club’s 27-year history! With plenty of new faces at the club though…there’s a suspicion that a few people are struggling with learning the vastly un-complex and highly un-original lyrics.
Like every good Australian Rules Football Club, the club song is part of the heart and soul of the club.
Given our high-profile namesake, The Sydney Swans, our club song is an exact replica to theirs.
To those new to Australian Rules Football, this clumsy use of lyrical plagiarism is popular throughout non-professional clubs across the world.
It goes without saying then that lyrical creativity is not a pre-requisite to playing Aussie Rules.
So what are the words?
The words of the Swans club song are:
Cheer, cheer the red and the white,
Honour the name by day and by night,
Lift that noble banner high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky
Whether the odds be great or small,
Swans will go in and win over all
While her loyal sons are marching
Onwards to victory!
More about the song’s history
According to The Sydney Swans website the song was adopted in 1961, replacing an adaptation of “Spring time in the Rockies” by American country star Gene Autry (Editor’s Note: We’re googling “Gene Autry” even as we write this).
The new song is a version of the 2nd verse of the University of Notre Dame Victory March, which is worded:
Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to victory.
The Sydney Swans was granted copyright to their own version in March 1961.
We think the Swans version sounds better personally…but then again, we would.
