We introduced a women’s team to the AFL London league for the first time in 2017, starting the year with a small group of women in an exhibition match at Oxford University and ending the year by fielding a competitive, full team each week.
We ended our first season in the competition only one goal away from competing in the AFL London Grand Final. This year we will again compete in the second tier Conference division of the competition, working hard to try and play in our very first Grand Final.
We pride ourselves on our inclusiveness, socialness and the support that we offer our new players. In our opinion, what matters most is that you enjoy running out on to the field with the team week after week (and coming out for a drink afterwards, if you want!).
In addition to club-wide social events like the London Swans summer boat cruise and our Jorts pub crawl we organise events exclusive to the women’s team including our pre-season bottomless brunch and our end of season football trip, which saw our team descent on Lagos (Portugal, not Nigeria) for a weekend last year.
Interest in women’s football is growing exponentially in London, just as it is in Australia and the rest of the world. Whether you were told there were no opportunities for you to play Australian rules as a girl beyond Auskick, or you’ve never actually seen an Aussie rules football, we are welcoming new players of all experience levels and backgrounds to come and have a kick with us in 2018 and beyond.
